The Lore of Shai

2011. Concept artist Nate Hallinan asks a strange question: what if Smurfs were real? He paints Smurf Sighting — a tiny blue hunter-gatherer walking home with his catch, a snail on a stick.

The mushroom isn't a hat. In Nate's lore, the creature lives in symbiosis with a fungus: it grows protective layers over his body, and in return he carries its spores through the forest. A cunning, apprehensive species — and getting rare.

2023. Twelve years later, Russian TikTok resurrects him as Шайлушай — Shailushai. Paired with Alan Walker's "The Spectre," three words attach forever: We live. We love. We lie. The whole brainrot multiverse follows.

Shai — that's what Nate calls him — was real art, years ahead of his time. Now he has a home on Solana.

Nate Hallinan

Concept artist and illustrator from Portland, Oregon, with 15+ years in games and film. He drew concept art for Borderlands, Rock Band 2 and Microsoft's Project Spark, and art-directed movie posters for Incredibles 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Dolittle — and yes, Smurfs: The Lost Village. His poster work has won a Clio and a Golden Trailer Award.

In September 2011 he painted Smurf Sighting. He still draws Shai today — seasonal costumes, new lore, the Fungistic Four. This project exists to honor his creation.
